Clean Up Australia Day brought the Yarrabilba community together this morning, gathering at The Buzz Community Centre on Basalt Drive for a morning of environmental action, connection, and local pride. Despite steady rain the day before, the skies cleared beautifully. As volunteers arrived for the 7:15am check‑in, the sun broke through the clouds, setting the tone for a bright and energetic start.
Volunteers collected gloves, rubbish bags, sunscreen, and water before the morning briefing. Safety reminders emphasised the essentials: sturdy enclosed footwear, gloves, hats, long sleeves, and caution around hazardous materials.
Organisers Michele and Scott welcomed volunteers, outlined the clean‑up plan, and coordinated groups heading to different locations. Their preparation and leadership shaped a smooth, friendly, and well‑run event.
Local MP Linus Power also joined the morning effort, chatting with volunteers and showing support for the community’s environmental work.
Volunteers spread out across several local areas, including:
The softened ground and fresh air left behind by the previous day’s rain made the parks greener and the morning more vibrant. Families, teens, and long‑time locals worked side by side, filling bags and restoring natural spaces across Yarrabilba.
Among the volunteers was Jack from Friends of Plunkett Conservation, whose involvement highlighted the strong connection between Yarrabilba and the surrounding natural areas, including the Plunkett Conservation Park.
The variety of rubbish collected showed just how important these clean‑ups are. Items ranged from empty Zooper Doopers, cans and bottles, and soft plastics, through to polystyrene packaging and even discarded bicycles hidden in the grass. Seeing bags fill so quickly was a clear reminder of how much litter accumulates in shared spaces—and how much difference a single morning of community effort can make.
When volunteers returned to The Buzz, the Lions Club of Logan Village had prepared a generous breakfast spread—sponsored by Nathan St Ledger from Logan City Council, Division 4, who is well‑known for supporting local community initiatives and environmental programs across the region. Instead of a simple sausage sizzle, the Lions served bacon and eggs in soft buns, along with fresh fruit, cereal, yoghurt, and plenty of poppers to keep everyone refreshed.
The breakfast created a warm, social atmosphere where volunteers could relax, chat, and celebrate the collective impact of their work. It was a thoughtful and appreciated gesture that added to the sense of community spirit.
Clean Up Australia Day in Yarrabilba once again showcased what makes this community special: teamwork, pride, and a shared commitment to caring for the environment. Thanks to the leadership of Michele and Scott, the support of Friends of Plunkett Conservation, the presence of Linus Power, and the generosity of the Logan Village Lions Club with sponsorship from Nathan St Ledger of Logan City Council, Division 4, the event was a meaningful success.
Every bag filled and every piece of litter collected contributed to a cleaner, healthier Yarrabilba—one small action at a time.
